Saul Bellow 1915~2005 Saul Bellow was one of my favourite writers and I remember how utterly fascinated I was by his books I read every one I could lay my hands on. Beginning with Herzog, I moved on to Dangling Man, Adventures of Augie March, Henderson the Rain King, Mr Sammler's Planet, Humboldt's Gift, Mosby's Memoirs, Him With His Foot in the Mouth, Dean's December, and more recently, Ravelstein. His books were always cerebral, with a melancholic streak typical of weary intellectuals who wrestle with despair. Saul Bellow had a gift, an acuity of sight that saw nobility in a world fast fading into the night. There will never be another writer quite like him.

Greetings.
First, my apologies for writing a comment not relevant to this piece of diary entry.
I am writing an article for a magazine on Malaysia's homeschooling . I found your Xanga when searching background info through websites and noticed that you are homeschooling your two sons. It will be most appreciated if I could get some of your opinion regarding the issue and have it quoted in my article.
According to the information I have, Malaysian government judges grant approval for homeschooling upon a case-for-case basis. Do you notice any change of their attitude, since the imprementation of Education Act 1996?
Is there anything regarding homeschooling that you would like to state or comment on?
Thank you again, and promptly, for reading this and answering my questions

oops aiging - i don't know you, i don't know who you represent, and i don't know why the interest in homeschooling. and that's not the usual way to get a conversation going. anyway, in principle the education act allows for conditional exemption from schooling in a govt or private institution: (a) the child seeking exemption must be exceptionally gifted and conventional schools are deemed to 'slow' for his needs, (b) the child is medically certified as learning disabled (c) the child and his family are frequently outof the country. since early 2004, those applying for exemption to homeschool have been turned down.
note that the term 'homeschooling' does not appear in the education act. but compulsory education is only for 6 years of primary school only. after that there is nothing to stop you from leaving school altogether or homeschooling.
Thank you for your information. It is my mistake not to let you know who I am working for.
I am writing for an article in Pinzhoubao(our website: http://www.pinzhoubao.com.cn), a weekly magazine published in Mainland China. We have a page called "Asian topic" and we write about news and stories which are happening in Asia. Our latest topic is the trend and situation of homeschooling education development in Malaysia and so I need to gather information about this issue.
This latest issue is going to be published next week, and I would be most grateful if you could provide us with your Chinese name as the article is written in Chinese. This is my email address: atikinik@yahoo.com.hk
There is a point I would like to ask you to clarify, too. You said that since early 2004, those applying for exemption to homeschool have been turned down. Do you mean all cases? Is this from official data? I asked because I noticed news reports claiming a statistics of number of homeschooling exemption cases(27, that is) up till Novemember 2004. Do you think the number has been unchanged since early last year?
Thank you so much for you time!
